Chamberí Historical Station

Chamberí Historical Station

OUR Heritage
Metro de Madrid

Chamberí station is part of the first eight stations of line 1 of Metro de Madrid, inaugurated in 1919. In the early 60’s, the Metropolitano Company decided to increase the length of the trains, which entailed an increase of the platforms themselves, and due to the impossibility of extending this station, it was closed.

It was finally closed on May 22, 1966. In 2008, after its restoration, it was opened to the public as a museum.

The Chamberí station, designed by the renowned architect Antonio Palacios, is based on a very functional solution, very simple in terms of routes and organization, and with meticulous finishes. Natural light was incorporated by means of a skylight in the lobby, which is now closed. The vault of the station is covered with white beveled tile and its abutments are decorated with large squares of Sevillian tiles that limit the outline of the advertising signs, also ceramic, in ochre and blue taping. These advertising signs are one of the great attractions of the station, since they are preserved practically as they were created in the decade of the 20s of the twentieth century.

As the museum is part of the Metro network, a ticket is required to access the Museum.

Metro Museums. Chamberí Historical Station
Estación de Chamberí. Plaza de Chamberí s/n 28010 Madrid, Madrid

METRO DE MADRID, a century-old company, has been recovering an important part of its historical heritage, creating a sort of "dispersed museum" through which it has been disseminating its history since its inauguration in 1G1G.

The suburban museums are spaces of unquestionable historical value, designed, among others, by the famous architect Antonio Palacios. Chamberí Station, Nave de Motores and Vestíbulo de Pacífico are some of its exponents. It also has a permanent exhibition of the first classic trains that ran on the metropolitan network.

In addition to this legacy are the archaeological remains found in the works of the subway at the Ópera station and musealized as Los Caños del Peral.

Feelings to live and touch in a singular journey through how much we are.
